Why You Need Your
Own Health Insurance Policy
- If you should become ill, or have an accident without health insurance, you could become bankrupt--even while still a student. A simple accident or injury could cost tens of thousands of dollars.
- You may be covered now under your parents' policy as a dependent, but dependent coverage ends when you are no longer a full-time student or after you turn 22.
- In addition to being temporary, dependent coverage is 2-3 times more expensive than StuHealth insurance you can purchase on your own.
- You may be covered now under a health insurance policy provided by your school. Your school policy is probably overpriced, offers limited coverage, and terminates when you are no longer a full-time student--leaving you uninsured if you develop an illness while still in school.
- After graduation, you might get health insurance from an employer--but today 40% of the full-time jobs in the U.S. do not offer health benefits. Every year 2 million fewer jobs offer health benefits because of cost.
- The time to get permanent, renewable health insurance is now, while you are still healthy--once you develop an illness or preexisting medical condition, you will generally not be able to purchase an affordable individual policy.
